HOT WAX by GREGG
HOT WAX by Gregg Witbeck
This monthly column will devote itself to those of us who still dance the night away. I will cover as much product as possible, but there is such a deluge of quality product that it would be impossible to do it all. I also hope that this will help the majority to be a little more accepting of the new music, as they used to be.
There are some excellent pieces out, most of witch I am sure that you have heard, so we will move on to some of the new releases. Taka Boom, "TO HELL WITH HIM" (Prelude 12")
Hot on the heels of the Weather Girls comes this energy (140 BPM) piece. Driving bass and probably some of the strongest vocals in a disco record in a while. Don't miss the HOT instrumental mix on the "B" side. Intense!!!
Donna Summer, "SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY" (Mercury 7")
Presently just a 45 RPM, but should be a 12" by the time you read this. Boy does she sound like Laura Branigan. Synthesizers, pumping bass, and Donna at her "BAD GIRLS" best. We've waited too long for this return, and she'll definitely keep the dance floor hot, ALL SUMMER.
Oh Romeo, "THESE MEMORIES" (Bobcat 12")
Bobby Orlando's new lable is putting out some strong product. This cut is probably the highlight.
Some of the sleaziest vocals you will ever hear at 142 BPM. If you' re an Orlando fan, don't miss this one and check out Malibu and One Plus One also on this label. Helen Reddy, "IMAGINATION" (MCA 12")
I know what you're thinking, but after you hear this, you'll understand. The music is from Romanelli, and believe it or not, Ms Reddy's vocals move this Euro floor packer all the way through. If you see it, get it!!
Paul Parker, "TOO MUCH TO DREAM" (Megatone LP)
This LP is a tribute not only to Parker, but also to the recently deceased Patrick Cowley who produced it.
The strongest cuts are "Too Much To Dream" (132 BPM), a remake of the classic with haunting synthesizers; "Love Is On The Line", typical driving Cowley with Parker's sensual vocals; and "Shot In The Night", which I am certain you have heard since it was the pre-release 12".
The "B" Side is good, but not Quite as strong as the "A" Side. The outstanding cut here is probably "Baby You Can Have My Loving Anytime". This is a mid-tempo number and is a little less intense, but still good. India, "STAY WITH ME" (West End 12")
With West End's change in format (Julius Brown, Sean Taylor, Shirley Lites) comes another energy piece from the team of Morali and Belolo (remember the Village People?). This particular cut has a Euro/rock sound with male vocals and is much in the same vien as Oh Romeo mentioned above.
Each month in this column we will also spotlight a D.3. from one of Disco's in Ohio as well as his/hers Top Ten. Support your favorite Clubs and D.J.'s. We're doing it for you!!
This month, I will take the spotlight. I am presently working at KEY'S, am a member of the Music Den Record Pool, a Hot Tracks Express Reporter, and the new Music Director for ACTION MAGAZINE. I have been a D.J. in Cleveland since 1979 and still LOVE IT!!!
New Dimensions Bowlers
are Number 1
Cleveland's North Coast Bowling Association's League is over until next September with New Dimensions as the First Place team and Jones Russell Florist in Second Place after 36 weeks of very competitive bowling. The Roll-off was this past Memorial Day Weekend. The Banquet and Awards Ceremony will be the following weekend. ACTION will bring you the outcome and photos. from those two weekends in our next issue.
For several months we have all enjoyed Sunday mornings at Ambassador Superior Lanes and there are many people who should be thanked, so we will do that now.
First, the owners and staff of the Bowling Alley, these people have really made all of us feel at home. Thank you. Second, the Sponsers, these men and women are the ones who put up the cash so we can all enjoy ourselves. Thanks to all of you. Third, is those four guys who have put & held together this large league, Ray A., Frank P., Big Daddy and of course Jim Blevins, the President. You guys have done a great job and we all thank you very much!! Last, but certainly not least was the bowlers themselves, who braved snowstorms and Sundaymorning Hangovers to compete. Thanks to all 200 of you!
